About Canary Wharf

One of the major financial centres of the UK, Canary Wharf is a commercial area situated on the Isle of Dogs in London. The location of one of the tallest buildings in Europe, One Canada Square, Canary Wharf is home to offices, retail space and many open areas including Canada Square, Cabot Square, Heron Quays, Wood Wharf, Westferry Circus and West India Quay.

In the 1960s, West India Docks was one of the busiest docks worldwide. Canary Wharf, which is located in the former West India Docks, takes its name from No. 32 berth of the West Wood Quay of the Import Dock, which imported fresh produce from the Mediterranean and Canary Islands. The Canary Islands were named after the large dogs the Spanish found on the island, and as the docks are located on the Isle of Dogs, coupled with the quay and warehouse, Canary Wharf was born.

Canary Wharf is now the European or world headquarters for many major financial companies, media organisations and professional service businesses.

One of the central squares in Canary Wharf is Canada Square, popular because of its large open space, which in winter is converted into an ice rink and underneath Canada Place is a shopping centre. One of the biggest squares is Cabot Square which features a fountain in the centre and further fountains around the perimeter. Westferry Circus is on the west side of Canary Wharf; dating back to 1812, the Poplar & Greenwich Roads Company ran a horse ferry between the Isle of Dogs and Greenwich, along the West Ferry and East Ferry roads.

The addition of the Docklands Light Railway, making use of redundant railway infrastructure and to improve access to and from Canary Wharf, helped to increase the area’s popularity with businesses worldwide.

Canary Wharf Office Space

Much of the office space in Canary Wharf is found in stunning modern and contemporary buildings, often with many floors, located alongside the docks and around open space squares. Many of the buildings offer amazing panoramic views over water, the London skyline and beyond. One Canada Square is a landmark iconic building and renting offices in this prestigious building are at a premium. However, there are more affordable options within Canary Wharf. Many open-plan, coworking and individual office suites, as well as meeting and conference rooms, provide the latest in technology and contemporary design.

Transport Connections

The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) serves four stations in Canary Wharf: Heron Quays, West India Quay, South Quay and Canary Wharf. There are an additional two DLR stations on the outskirts of the area, Poplar and Blackwall. Crossrail’s Elizabeth Line will also operate via Canary Wharf, making the area an even more attractive option for companies looking for office space to rent.

Canary Wharf’s underground provides access to the Jubilee line and there are several bus routes serving the area, connecting with many areas of London. London City Airport is linked to Canary Wharf via the DLR and an interchange to the London underground.

The Canary Wharf pier is part of a London River Services pier on the River Thames, located to the west of Canary Wharf, nearby to Narrow Street, Limehouse.

Food, Drink and Leisure

Canary Wharf is like a home-from-home with two marinas that can be used for private moorings, a public library within the Churchill Place shopping mall, and two multiplexes, one run by Cineworld and the other by Everyman Cinema.

Alongside the vast range of high-tech offices, there are five shopping centres in Canary Wharf, such as Jubilee Place, Canada Place and Canary Wharf Shopping Centre, offering a wide range of high street names, department stores, designer brands and small fashion boutiques, health & beauty, and homeware stores.

There is a plethora of cafes, eateries, bars and restaurants in Canary Wharf offering a huge range of tastes and cuisines, from sandwiches, soups and snacks to Asian, French, Halal, Mexican and of course, British.
