About Ilford

Ilford in East London was originally a rural settlement in the county of Essex and slowly developed as a coaching town in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, mostly due to its close proximity to the River Roding and the Colchester to London road. After the arrival of the railway in 1839, Ilford significantly expanded and its commercial and retail heritage began. New buildings and factories were built to accommodate the growing industries in the area, including brickworks, coal yards and cement works. Paper making, collar making and steam laundries followed and a number of major businesses were started in Ilford. Today, Ilford is populated by a wide range of businesses, from local companies to international corporations, occupying a mix of office premises.
