About Farringdon

Situated between Clerkenwell and the City, Farringdon is a popular office location for a range of companies, including technology firms, designers and architects, and business services.

Farringdon is made up of two wards, Farringdon Within and Farringdon Without. The ‘Within’ and ‘Without’ referred to when the ward was split in 1934. Within denoted the ward falling within the London Wall, and Without fell outside the wall.

Although the area doesn’t have any defined boundaries, they are generally considered to be Clerkenwell Road to the north, Goswell Road to the east, Charterhouse Street and Square to the south, and Farringdon Road to the west.

The railway station was built nearby to Farringdon Road, a continuation of Farringdon Street which was built constructed over River Fleet in 1737. In 1829 the road was widened and was originally the location of Farringdon Market, which was established in 1826 replacing Fleet Market, which was closed to make way for Farringdon Street.

Farringdon station is situated in Clerkenwell and close to the northern boundary of the City of London. The Thameslink north-south rail route currently serves this station, and the planned Crossrail east-west service will mean the building of new station entrances.
