About Great Portland Street

Great Portland Street forms the boundary between Fitzrovia and Marylebone, linking Oxford Street with Marylebone Road and Albany Street. The street has its own unique charm and character, separating distinct areas, including Portland Place, Harley Street and Fitzrovia.

The street is mostly made up of Edwardian and Victorian properties, although following bomb damage from World War II, a number of houses were rebuilt and modern developments were constructed, many of which now containing modern, flexible offices.

Great Portland Street has been linked to many different trades and industries over the years, including clothing, music, vehicles and broadcasting. A diverse range of businesses rent office space in a mix of converted period properties and modern business centres.

Great Portland Street became colloquially known as ‘Motor Row’ in early 20th century due to its propensity for car manufacturers and dealerships, with over 30 car showrooms located along the street. The Benz Motor dealership was at the intersection with Weymouth Street and other manufacturers – Vauxhall, Austin and Jaguar – also had offices here.

There are still traces of evidence that hark back to when Great Portland Street was a major centre for women’s fashion in the 1950s and 1960s. The clothing trade started with stock and work rooms in the early 1900s on Great Portland Street, growing over the years and supplying London’s West End shops.
