About Fleet Street
Located in the City of London, Fleet Street is host to a wide range of businesses, housed in premium office space. Fleet Street has been associated with printing and publishing since the 16th century and by the 20th century, the majority of Britain’s national newspapers were based here. Although most of the newspaper groups have moved out of the area, many of their former office buildings are now listed and the term Fleet Street remains synonymous with the national press.
Fleet Street and its surrounding area was dominated by the national press and other related industries by the 20th century. Many of the buildings that were originally the home of newspapers remain, some of which are Grade II listed such as number 135-142 where the Daily Telegraph was based, and number 121-128 which housed the Daily Express. Many of the newspapers and publishers have since moved away from Fleet Street, but the area is still synonymous with the printing and publishing industry. There are a significant number of statues and monuments along Fleet Street, including memorials to a number of figures from the British press.
Fleet Street is now more associated with the investment banking, legal and accountancy professions with many of the old newspaper offices becoming the London headquarters for various companies.
