About Essex
The county of Essex sits north east of London and incorporates the new towns of Basildon and Harlow, as well as Colchester which is the oldest recorded town in Britain. A major commuter area, most of Essex’s industry is located in offices south of the county, while in the north it is predominantly agriculture. Harlow is a well-known centre for the science and pharmaceutical industries, with Chelmsford being strongly associated with electronics companies. The financial and insurance services are also found in the area. Mechanical engineering industries, including glassmaking, plastics and metalworking, are located in other parts of the county, and Colchester is a garrison town.
