Crawley

Crawley is a large town in West Sussex, close to Gatwick Airport. The opening of Gatwick Airport in the 1940s significantly increased its growth as a leading industrial and commercial town in the South East. Post-war, the government needed to source new areas for developing new housing outside of London as part of their New Towns act of 1946 and Crawly was designated as one of these areas. The major building plan included commercial, industrial and civic areas, including new dedicated office buildings, and there has been a rapid increase in the size and population of the town over the past couple of decades.

The early part of the 20th century saw many of the grand mansions and estates in the Crawley area being split to make way for the ‘new town’ development. The plan designated that each new ‘district’ of Crawley would be built around local shops, a church, a pub, a community centre and a school.

As well as the importance of Gatwick Airport in terms of employment in the area, and the formation of the Gatwick Diamond partnership enhanced this, Crawley is also a manufacturing and light engineering hub, which is still going strong today.

Offices to Rent in Crawley

The Manor Royal business park was one of the first to be developed which attracted many different types of business to the area, making use of the variety of style and size of ready-made industrial buildings. Office space in the town also significantly increased with major companies moving in and Crawley has since become the headquarters for many international businesses. The majority of the office space is in dedicated business parks and business centres in modern buildings and is available at affordable rents.

Transport Links

Crawley’s transport links to all parts of the UK are second-to-none, helped by its location on the London to Brighton road, attracting a range of companies to office space in the town. The train station, within walking distance of the town centre, provides services to London, the south coast and links with other rail networks. There are two further railway stations at Ifield and Three Bridges with regular services to London Victoria, London Bridge, Gatwick Airport, Chichester, Portsmouth and Southampton.

The A23 is the major route through the town and is linked to the M23 motorway, providing easy connections to the M25, London and the national motorway network. There are also plenty of bus and coach routes available in and around Crawley.

Gatwick Airport is on the outskirts of the town centre and provides regular flights worldwide.

Shopping and Restaurants

In addition to modern office premises, Crawley’s High Street is filled with a wide variety of local shops, independent traders and retail stores, as well as local weekly markets. Several shopping centres, such as The Broadwalk, Queen’s Square, which is a pedestrianised plaza, and County Mall, offer a wide variety of high street names and department stores, as well as a multitude of smaller shops and independent traders.

Throughout Crawley, there is an abundance of cafés, coffee shops, eateries, bars, pubs and restaurants offering a diverse style of cuisine. Many of the pubs are former coaching inns, artisan coffee shops serve the finest coffees sourced from around the world, and there are restaurants and eateries that will suit every budget.
