By the late 1500s, London was a major centre for banking and commerce. Smithfield Market and Leadenhall Market are located within the City and there are a few private gardens and open spaces, such as the Inner Temple and the Middle Temple Inns of Court. The River Thames and its riverside are popular relaxation areas in The City. With excellent transport links across London and beyond, in addition to the many famous landmarks and prestigious organisations in the area, The City is a highly-sought after location for business premises.

Transport Links

The majority of the London Underground’s lines operate through The City, connecting with all underground stations. Liverpool Street, Fenchurch Street and Cannon Street are longer-distance rail terminals, whilst Moorgate provides services to Hertfordshire. There are two Docklands Light Railway (DLR) stations in The City - Tower Gateway and Bank.
The A1, A10, A3, A4 and A40 road routes start from The City and lead out of London via six bridges including Blackfriars Bridge, London Bridge, Southwark Bridge and Cannon Street Railway Bridge. There are two bus stations in The City, in Aldgate and at Liverpool Street, providing plenty of routes including a night bus service.
One London River Services pier is located on the Thames within The City and provides regular passenger services.
Shopping and Restaurants
The City provides a number of retail opportunities, including department stores and a shopping centre. There are also a range of specialist shops, cafes, pubs, pop-up stalls and street-food vendors in the area, alongside a wealth of modern offices and skyscrapers. Several new, luxury hotels have also been built within The City boundaries over the past few years.
More extensive shopping outlets can be found nearby in neighbouring boroughs, as well as a wide selection of restaurants, wine bars, pubs and cafes.
