About Borough

Borough is a thriving area in central London, based around the historical Borough Market, one of the oldest and largest wholesale and retail food markets in London. Borough is a thriving business location, housing a range of companies in a mix of period and modern office premises. 

The market dates back to the 12th century, although the present buildings were built in the 1850s. It was mainly a wholesale market selling large quantities of produce to greengrocers. Today, the market sells predominantly specialty foods, fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese, game and meat, bread and pastries.

The current market buildings were built in 1851, with additions in the 1860s and an Art Deco entrance added on Southwark Street in 1932. In 2001, the market started a campaign of refurbishment including the re-erection of the Grade II listed South Portico from the Floral Hall, which was completed in 2004.

Other attractions near Borough are Clink Prison Museum, one of England’s oldest prisons, The Golden Hind, a full size reconstruction of Sir Francis Drake’s flagship, Southwark Cathedral with its stunning architecture and beautiful grounds, and The Shard, the tallest building in the UK.
